day 13: faceless portrait

This was my first tattoo; it's the image of the Koru, a traditional Maori symbol for the uncurling fern, representative of change, of new chapters in life and new beginnings.  I decided to mark myself for life with this symbol the year I found my birthmother.  After a long life of not knowing who she was or if she was even alive, I felt it only appropriate to mark the occasion of finding and meeting her on my skin - in ink!
