Overcoming Insecurities in Photos
Getting over insecurities at your photo session is a topic that comes up CONSTANTLY, and following a recent maternity session, I felt like this was the perfect time to talk about why it's so important to let it go and make memories that will last a lifetime.
The number one thing I hear from my couples and clients is that they’re terrified of being in front of the camera. You feel completely vulnerable. You’re worried your double chin is being accentuated, or that one of your eyes is smaller than the other when you smile too hard, or that your hair is having A MOMENT.
GUYS. I FEEL YOU. There’s nothing in the world that scared me more than being at the mercy of another photographer. My hair is a whole thing. And when it’s in the right place, it’s HELLO QUEEN. When it’s not…it’s more like WHO LEFT THIS POOR HOMELESS SHEEPDOG OUTSIDE ALL NIGHT!?
I’m here to tell you that it’s time to get over it. Have your feelings…and then move on.
If you’ve hired a photographer for something - your wedding, your family photos, your newborn session - chances are, you looked for a long time before you pulled that trigger. If you’re anything like me, you trolled their instagram, read their blog, sifted through every inch of their website. You checked Yelp for reviews! You asked your friends who they’ve used! And then you practiced your faces for hours in the mirror. Or you upped your selfie game in the days leading up to the big one, trying to learn your own angles. YOU DID YOUR HOMEWORK. But when it comes time to have your photos taken, it’s time to let it go and let your photographer do what they’re best at.
(If you’re singing “Let it Go” in your head now, you’re not alone. And if you weren’t….I bet you are now that you’ve read this sentence.)
Some of the best images I’ve ever taken are the ones that happen in between direction. Laughing because I’ve tripped over my camera bag for the fourth time in ten minutes, or because I can’t stop dropping The Good Place quotes into conversation… THAT’S when I like to click away. Because it’s genuine. And it’s happy. And THOSE are the images where you can actually hear someone’s laugh just by looking at them.
This Mama-to-be (and one of my past brides!) had emailed me prior to her session worried because she felt….well, super pregnant. By the end, any hesitation was completely forgotten, and we had spent a solid 45 minutes laughing and catching up. And now those images are going to be cherished forever.
Don’t let insecurity stop you from making memories! Find someone you’re comfortable with, and trust them to do their job. Capturing these fleeting moments is priceless!
